Medusa, meaning 'queen', was one of three beautiful daughters of Phorcys and Ceto, children of Earth and Sea. The two sisters of Medusa were immortal, medusa was mortal and far more fair.
Athena, Goddess of wisdom and crafts, was envious of Medusa because her beauty rivalled that of the goddess.
Athena was outraged when she became aware that the god Poseidon had once made love with Medusa in the holy sanctuary dedicated to Athena. For this sacrilegious act, Athena turned Medusa, and her sisters Stheno and Euryale, into Gorgons. They became winged monsters with decaying skin and poisonous vipers as hair. Medusa, whose beautiful and alluring eyes, that even the gods envied, had the power to turn anything that looked directly at them into stone, gods or mortals, for eternity. Even in death the eyes of Medusa retained their power.
The sisters were banished to the edge of the known world on an island that no mortal man had seen.
The art that i have created is of a time before the demi-god Perseus. Perseus was the son of the god Zeus, and Danae daughter of the king of Argos, Acrisius. Perseus is the Greek hero who eventually slays Medusa, with an immortal weapon.
My imaginary story for the composition is of an unknown hero from the lands of Macedonia. He is hidden somewhere behind her, fearful of her gaze. The task given to this hero by the gods, is to retrieve a divine bow that belongs to the goddess Athena. The hero has already shot two arrows which have become embedded in the wing of Medusa. She turns to look at the enemy and her head of coiled snakes, with glowing eyes and deathly venom, begin to survey the domain.
Artists have portrayed Medusa many times. Caravaggio the Italian Master painter, created a painting showing the head of Medusa c.1597.
When i began to draw the face of my composition i became aware that if i made her appearance hideous and frightening it would be too obvious, since there have been many depictions of Medusa in this way. I decided to show her gaze looking down and avoiding eye contact. Only when she opens her eyes and stares into the soul of the unfortunate victim, does she reveal her true power.
I have left the viewer of this art to use their own creative ideas of the Medusa facial image.
When it comes to creating art i almost always focus on the detailing, as demonstrated in this image. All of my drawings, be they large or small, will reflect this discipline. I also tend to make the compositions dynamic, original, and creative. This i hope will capture the viewers attention long enough to appreciate the amount of time and effort used to create my work. Finally, i create art on a professional level as i have been taught. The work ethics, discipline and achievement is reflected and justified in the price of this artwork.
I used premium quality graphite pencils of various grades. I also used premium quality acrylic and high quality paper. The client will receive a unique and original work of 'fine art'.
The artwork will be protected with archival quality paper and reinforced with card, front and back. Documentation of artwork authenticity will be included. Bubble wrap will be used to further protect the artwork. The artwork is then placed in a sturdy five panel flat box and ready to be shipped.
